MILLINERY MADE EASY (2 days)

This workshop is a must if you want to learn basic millinery techniques used with buckram.  It will provide a solid and basic foundation upon which to build your knowledge.  You will create a pillbox hat frame using buckram, millinery wire and joiners plus you will learn why batting and bias binding contribute to a couture hat.

The first day is spent creating a buckram frame pillbox hat and the second day you will learn how easy it is to cover the hat frame.

To continue your pursuit of millinery techniques working with buckram, the following workshops are suggested:  Millinery Made Easy II, Vivacious Victorian Hats, Garden Party and Freeform Buckram.

SAUCY FASCINATOR (one day)

Head adornments not only enhance the face but they add a touch of mystery and glamour to a simple outfit.  The saucer fascinator does just that.  It's the ultimate head adornment according to the British royal family.  It can be worn on many occasions such as a tea, church, weddings, cocktail parties, graduations, and so on.  Buckram hat frame #BF2555 or #BF2556 is included in the kit.  The hat frames have a rounded crown with a 3" or 4" brim. 

In this workshop you will learn how to cover the buckram saucer fascinator and embellish it with feathers, flowers, fabrics, rhinestones, and other materials.

GLOVEMAKING: AN ANCIENT ART (one day)

Whether you have a fitting problem, a need to make a gift or just want to wear custom gloves that fit, this workshop is for you!  Learn the ancient art of glovemaking in this unique workshop.  Simple instructions, samples and visual aids will guide you step-by-step through the process of hand stitching custom gloves.  You will learn gloving terminology, stitches, fabric requirements and much more.  You will also be shown a large collection of vintage gloves that will provide the inspiration to make more.

MILLINERY MADE EASY II  (two days)

This workshop is a follow-up to Millinery Made Easy but not a prerequisite.  A boater buckram hat frame is constructed using basic millinery techniques.  The boater has a flat crown and large flat brim.  Fabric choices, styles and embellishments will be discussed.  Emphasis is placed not only on the construction of the hat frame but the millinery techniques used to add a brim to a crown and also cover the hat so it looks fresh and beautiful.

The first day is spent constructing the buckram hat frame; the second day you will cover the hat frame and insert the lining.  Embellishments will be discussed.  Time permitting, you may also start to embellish the hat.

VIVACIOUS VICTORIAN HATS (2 days)

There is something captivating and romantic about the hats worn during the Victorian era. This is your opportunity to create a beautiful Victorian hat of your own while learning many millinery  techniques.  Fabric choices, styles and embellishments of the period will be discussed as well as various fabrication methods..   Emphasis is placed on the technique of adding a brim to a crown.  Although this workshop is a follow-up to Millinery Made Easy which is a pillbox without a brim, it is not a prerequisite. 

The first day is spent learning millinery techniques and constructing the buckram hat frame; the second day you will cover the hat frame and insert the lining.  Embellishments will be discussed and you may also have time to start embellishing your hat.

HOW DO YOU DRESS A HAT? (one day)

This workshop concentrates on simple embellishments for stylish hats that need ‘something’ to make it unique. Embellishments include two different styles of ribbon flowers/leaves, a double bow using horsehair braid, a horsehair pouf, a velvet chou, and fabric feathers. Participants will take home a variety of embellishments made in class.  Many of the techniques are also suitable for embellishing apparel.

FREEFORM BUCKRAM (two days)

This workshop is for participants who have previously taken one of the following classes: Millinery Made Easy, Millinery Made Easy II, Vivacious Victorian Hats, Garden Party.  Creativity is the 'name of the game' in this class.  On day one you will utilize the millinery techniques learned in previous class(es) to create your own design.  After creating the buckram frame, on day two you will cover the frame with fabric and embellish it.

PARTY PIZZAZZ (one day)

Prepare for the coming holidays by creating a confection of a hat to wear.  It starts with a mini-pillbox hat frame that is covered with  your most luxurious fabric.  Then the magic starts as you create the embellishments to adorn it.  During this time, you will learn about various millinery techniques and embellishment details.  You will leave the workshop with a beautiful party hat and the hands-on experience to create many more.

HAT FRAME COVER-UP  (one day)

You will have a lot of fun in this workshop "dressing" a buckram frame (BF6053).  Participants in this creative workshop will learn how to cover a buckram hat frame using several different methods depending on the fabrication and occasion.  Millinery techniques such as the proper stitches to use, how to sew and insert linings, and draping a hat frame will be discussed and demonstrated.  You will leave the workshop with a beautiful hat that you created and the confidence to create many more hats.  It's a great way to supplement your hat wardrobe without spending a fortune for a new hat!

FANTASY TEARDROP (one day)

Do you love the "little nothing" hats that were worn in the 30s on the forehead?  Well, now is your opportunity to create a fascinator using a teardrop hat frame in a style that you love - especially now that they are back in style!  You will cover a teardrop hat frame base with fashion fabric and then use your creativity to fashion an adornment.  You can even create your own bridal headpiece!  Samples and illustrations will be available to spark your imagination.

GARDEN PARTY (two days)

Greet the lazy, hazy days of summer with a beautiful summer hat!  In this class, you will learn many millinery techniques while creating a  hat using buckram.  The hat consists of a brim and a very narrow side band.  There is no crown which means that you will stay refreshingly cool.  The first day you will create the hat frame; the second day is spent learning how to cover the hat frame with fabric and embellishing it.  After finishing your garden party hat, you will be all set to invite your friends over for afternoon tea!

All workshops are conducted in the studio of Pattern Studio.  To provide you with individual attention, the maximum number for each class is limited to six participants.   Instructions and/or a pattern will be provided with each class as well as an overview of what you will accomplish each day.   

After registration, you will receive a Supply List and directions to the studio.  Several of the workshops require that you bring sewing supplies and a selection of fabrics.  By registering early, you will ensure your place in a class and it will give you enough time to assemble your sewing supplies and select fabrics to bring.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

Registration deadline for each workshop is one week prior to the workshop date.
o  Upon registration, you will receive a class confirmation, location, directions and a list of supplies that you must bring to the workshop. 
o  To ensure that each participant receives individual attention, class size is limited to six participants with a minimum of three participants. 
o  Participants are responsible for making arrangements for accommodation and/or travel.
o  For one- or two-day workshops, you may bring your own lunch or order a box lunch as explained below.
o  Classes are never conducted for only one person.

Withdrawals received up to the class deadline will receive a full refund: after the class deadline, $25.00 will be deducted from the refund.  No shows are not entitled to a refund.

Box Lunch Information
Box lunches are available providing you specify your request on your Registration Form.  They are $8.50 and contain a delicious sandwich on whole wheat bread, pasta salad, bag of potato chips and chocolate brownie.  Sandwich fillings are turkey, ham, tuna salad and chicken salad.  On the Registration Form, specify 'Box Lunch' in the Workshop Name column, Sandwich Filling in the Workshop Location column, and $8.50 in the Cost column for each day you are attending.  Bottled water only will be available at the studio.
